Abantu logoEstablished in 1991, ABANTU for Development is a sub-regional gender and policy advocacy NGO. The organisation’s vision is to promote women’s rights and gender justice for transformational leadership and change in Africa. The focus of the organisation’s work is to promote women’s active participation and representation at all levels of decision making.

ABANTU for Development has been a Southern Voices partner since August 2014.

ABANTU’s work on climate change
ABANTU is the host of a coalition of organisations and activists working on gender and climate change: Gender Action on Climate Change for Equality and Sustainability (GACCES). GACCES serve as a platform for policy engagement, capacity building and advocacy on climate change from a gender perspective

ABANTU, as the host of GACCES, has focused on the following areas of climate change advocacy:
  • Campaign to gain acceptance of women as a constituency under the UNFCCC
  • Promoting a gender perspective within the Africa Adaptation Programme
  • Incorporating gender in Ghana’s Climate Change Policy.
  • Incorporating gender into submissions made to the Africa Group of Negotiators to the UNFCCC on early warning and agriculture.

Advocacy and the Joint Principles for Adaptation
ABANTU’s advocacy strategy is targeted at the Ghana National Climate Change Adaptation Strategy (NCCAS). In 2016, Abantu for Development developed a new strategy for policy influencing and capacity development. The strategy was developed with support from the second phase of the Southern Voices on Adaptation program.

The objective is to increase transparency of adaptation fund allocation through establishment of a civil society campaign platform. This platform should be equipped to monitor and track national funds allocated to climate change adaptation.

In relation to the Joint Principles for Adaptation (JPA), ABANTU has chosen to focus on principle B and E. These principles are in clear line with ABANTU’s efforts to promote transparency and gender sensitivity in adaptation fund allocations.

Principle B   Public funds for adaptation are utilised efficiently and managed transparently  and with integrity
Principle E
The resilience of groups who are most vulnerable to climate change is promoted

Key achievements from advocacy work
ABANTU’s advocacy work has ensured a great extent of buy-in by policy makers to incorporate gender equality issues in climate change policies while also accepting the JPA as a tool to guide implementation strategies of the policies.

Additionally, ABANTU has also achieved increased media coverage, which has enabled the organisation to further promote the JPA.
